Here's What Sucks About Indians

I am very angry today. And it's not personal anymore. For all the great things about us Indians, there is some pretty crappy stuff too. I know a lot of people are going to jump up and add their point of views here. Go on, be my guest.

I have never left this country - so much so, I have not even been to Bhutan, where apparently, you do not even need a passport to go. I have never been to Sri Lanka. Heck, I have never been to the Andamans! But I seem to be surrounded by people who have had several foreign trips stashed away in their list of experiences. And from what I hear, a greater part of the developed world is not just developed materially, but they are also developed mentally.

There is an inherent respect for the pedestrian, shop owners are not painful when it comes to returns policy and exchange, people are generally very helpful. P wondered aloud this morning, why its that way in developed nations. Why is everybody behaving in the right way, why does everybody have civic sense instilled in them. No, he does not mean that they do not have crime rates, that they do not know petty politics or that they are doing everything right.

But the basics? Here I am, paying taxes, walking on roads full of potholes, following all traffic rules just to have my car dented by a moron who has a license and thinks that therefore, the road belongs to him, and still goes scot-free. Here I am, working for a greater part of my working hours where it takes forever for merit to get recognised and rewarded. Here I am, putting up with power cuts, erratic water supply, slow internet speeds, phone lines that go dead and pollution so thick, I can hardly breathe. With all these basic problems that I face everyday, who would want to be helpful and content and kind?

Why is this happening? Because we have people in positions of power that are too busy filling up their own treasuries, because we are too tired after earning our daily bread to bother protesting, because we flout rules and feel proud about bending them, apparently, it makes us seem cool. For these short term gains, here are the questions we are forgetting to ask ourselves...

How much brain does it require to see that pollution kills so it needs to be curtailed this way or that? How much brain does it take to realise that if we all followed traffic rules, we would get to our destinations faster and in one whole living piece? How much education does it require to understand that littering is a heinous crime against the earth you occupy space on?

How many grey cells does it take to understand that petty politics may get you favours from your current boss but you are going to be a nobody capable of ass-licking alone anywhere outside of your current job roles? And really, how much intelligence do you need to see that a business is not about numbers, it is about people?

I am making a serious allegation here - I THINK INDIANS IN GENERAL NEITHER HAVE CIVIC SENSE NOR DO THEY EXHIBIT A DEVELOPED SENSE OF WORK ETHIC.

Officially, from today, I am declaring myself. I no longer blame educated Indians for settling down abroad. Essentially, it is easy to debate and say, hell, where did your patriotic streak go, be the change you wish to see, etc etc. My primary argument right now is this - with all the awesomeness I and my friends are exhibiting, what guarantee do I have that in this very lifetime, I will be able to live and breathe in a cleaner, greener India, where merit is recognized, where great work is rewarded, where the earth and its issues are taken seriously? Where I will not be part of the minority that is putting in efforts? Where people will finally wake up and see that things need to be done together for a system to work and move ahead?

Until then, it is okay for all of them people to fly away, find themselves lives that they feel are rewarding and fulfilling and enriching in every way. Be it in the US, in Tel Aviv, in Dubai, in Singapore, in United Kingdom, or anywhere else. All of you are selfish individuals, which is the final truth about all of us - at least, you have the guts and knowledge to acknowledge it and make your life out into what you want it to be.

Unlike this complaining lot of uncouth, educated vermin that breeds here, eloquent and well-read and therefore very dangerous, for it is this species that is going to sap all life out of this nation that has the potential of otherwise being so much more than anybody ever imagined. These people are dangerous because they can give you hour long lectures on exactly what is wrong, all the while being clueless about how to fix it. Even worse, sometimes they know how to fix it but will not take one step towards the right thing.

And before you jump up to say - but you can join politics, you can become the CEO and change work ethics, and you can join an NGO, stop a second. I am not saying those efforts are worthless. I am just saying its going to take forever, it is not going to happen anytime soon and baby...some of us are just too impatient to wait around. Some of us want to live NOW. Some of us do not want to live hoping for a better tomorrow.

Dear Indians, living in India - you have over-evolved and now it is just plain decay. You have no civic sense, no sense of professional ethics, no sense of importance for what really deserves attention, you think you can get away with anything but unfortunately, it is you who pays everyday for being the lesser mortal that you are choosing to be. It's just plain unfortunate. And I really, really feel bad for you.

I agree with you on every point Reem.

Something needs to be done. These lazy lumps of lard we have heading our country put a democracy to shame.
Nothing can come to good as long as they're sitting on our money and milking us with their own sweaty palms!

hey Rims, I have also felt this frustration number of times, and the other day I was wondering why should I not go to New Zealand, but there is happiness in this madness.

But I dont agree with the corruption part, I think US is more corrupt than India, just that it is at higher level. Most of the MNCs work around laws to save tax (my company does it), degrade environment, and lot more things. Just that they hire hundreds of law experts who keep finding loop holes and keep them away from it. Eg Pepsi (or Coke) plant in Kerala and such stuff.

But I agree that this civic sense is missing in India. We as individuals have to do something, but it would take lot of time. but I do hope that this civic sense will come and come very soon.

Agree with the thoughts of course, but just out of curiosity, are you and Prasanna leaving/thinking of leaving the country?

I could play Devil's advocate but that's not the point... All we can do is what we are responsible for...

Yes, you are right!! We do not have any sense whatsoever!! We stand on the streets loosely stating that this country has no future. What future do we expect??? Travelling in ever crowded, unhygienic, smelly local trains, dealing with a 6 hour load shedding, no scope of a decent life or recognition of good work?? I still remember when I won my first (and only) science fair price. The next day, in the morning assembly, they announced that they were "proud" that the school had bagged the 2nd place. They called me out, referring me as "vinit bandergee"!! Now tell me - who the hell is this guy?? and also tell me can't you morons call out a simple name properly??? Even my first name would have sufficed y'now!! Mark my words- THERE IS NO APPRECIATION HERE!! I travel in a smelly local train filled with all sorts of creatures descended from hell itself, to get home . I'm harassed by eunuchs, lepers, dirty bums etc in the railway stations only coz someday, by some luck I'll be an "engineer". I just can't figure out why the hell am I slogging my ass off behind something I'm sure will get me paid but won't guarantee appreciation. My so called "friends" as I sometimes refer to them, are the worst bastards I've ever met. They will make Alex DeLarge (The protagonist of A Clockwork Orange by Anthony Burgess) seem like a saint!! They deliberately leave the ceiling fans and lights of the classroom turned on before leaving. I once asked them casually why they do this. "Fees ka paisa wasoolna hai!! Ha ha ha ha ha" came the reply. These, my fellow bloggers, are the kind of people residing in this already doomed country. And I blame myself too, for being with these people. The parliament is too busy with IPL to be discussing developmental activities. People here are educated, yet they "indulge" in hooliganism. Let's face it, we are the so-called "lower level of species". I sometimes agree with racists. In a way they are right to call us demeaning to society. What India needs is a benevolent dictator, who will force us into being educated law abiding citizens and yet reward us for our work. Democracy is for level headed, educated people; not hell hole residing vermin like ourselves.

we are so many of us here. So so many! It's difficult to be efficient in a crowd. When the struggle is for survival and space, very few can afford to think of comfort and/or civic duties. no?

We can at best try to make our immediate surrounding as Good as we can. We should be incorruptible, infallible, one person at a time, and may be the billions will follow.

I do realize what you say, but its been more of the momentary thing to me.

Yes I do respect pedestrians when I drive in other countries, When ever a pedestrian Smiles at you , or a fellow drives raises hand to say thanks you feel good . I don’t mind letting others go even 10 times while I drive in other countries. The moment I drive here for some reason I am not able to do this. Either I am afraid that letting one go I will end up letting 100’s of pedestrians go or just want to get to other point as quick as possible. Here the issue is purely just the size of the population. You don’t expect so many people to be on road walking in US, AU or NZ but here we have. In most of the signal atleast in US I have seen people can press a button if they want to cross a road, Do think we can do this here ? how many times the button would be pressed in a minute ?

I sometimes wonder if it is a genetic disorder with our race for that I am not saying we all are like that. We all know Singapore is a very clean country, But only place I found anomaly was in little India an Indian locality, what should we say about that. For that cause I don’t like Singapore its just too artificial, any ways you can have far better control when your country is just 40 + km in radius.

When ever I have wandered in New Zealand I have wondered how wonderful the place is? Again with just 40+ lakh people its much easy to control. Australia for that cause is same with 5 times the land size of our country and just 2 crore of population Its easy to set regulation. I agree that they also posses social responsibility which you can see in Sydney where 40 % of population resides. We as an individual tend to be more responsible in other country than in ours !!

Regarding the work culture I agree we are just to much of manager dependent, but its mostly our fault, we start compromising on personal things over professional. We expect higher salary hikes, promotions and petty thing like that , Have you ever wondered how much salary hike your US counter part has got from the day he has joined his company ?? , Check his position how many promotion have they got in years of works?? . How many company has he changed?? Unless we understand what actually we need I don’t think we would be satisfied. Regarding recoganization you got to market yourself more, People in US can market hafeezpet (Hyderabad) lake to lake Tahoe.

People is India(us) are over smart , They are the best example of oxymoron. Every body knows we shouldn’t drive in wrong side still we do , all of them know we shouldn’t cross in red light still we do just because we have to be over smart.

My personal opinion when I am in other places after few months I like to be in a crowded place , enjoying mid night biriyani ,standing in chowpaty at middle of night, showing my driving skills in crowded traffic signal. When I am here after few months I want to be in US, NZ, or AU.

Everything is changing in our land. I see wonderful 4-6 lane road from kolkata to kanyakumari , I see adverstiment aired with “Green” themes. I see far better towns now than few years back. I see future here. With much more super humans (compared to US people) our county will have shift. we have to either be here after few more years when a better place is there or just stay here and see how its changing around us. I am ok with both the options. You have a free will you can choose yours.

While I don't comment regularly on your posts, I make sure to read them.

Every word in this post is true and hits me on my ultra-patriotic head every single time. I'm someone who's married to someone who living abroad. And the only reason we want to come back is to be in our country and do what we can. I know it all sounds very filmi, but its true.

While everything and anything can be frustrating in India, I think the peace of mind one gets with an untarnished conscience when one sleeps is unmatchable except in India, especially when you do the right thing. I used to fight, scream, physically abuse (long story) for precisely these reasons. I don't anymore. Not coz I care less, but because I'm above all this. I do what is right. Try to tell people and make it better for me.

That said I'm not one of those uncaring-whatever-as long as I'm right people, it hurts every single time. But as humans, as Indians, we also come back with spirit every single time.

And I agree with Ugly Girl's comment here.

And I'm sorry for hogging this space.

You know Reema, my friend after listening to all the distress i went through to get a passport (yes, I bribed) Just said, "mera bharat lahaan".

I really felt like there is no place to be idealistic here. I feel pathetic about this state of affairs.

I know of mothers hoping their daughters marry and settle abroad, and really I know why, cause they only wish a better life than theirs for their daughters.

I am ok too sometimes with people who flee. But only sometimes.

I often ask myself what I want my children to grow up and be. I feel there is no place for them. It gets tough and sometimes I dread teaching in another school, cause I dont want to feel lost for another 45 children.

It gets tiring.

I don't want to know when this screwed-up attitude started and why is it like this, in India. But I know it can be changed and I am determined to initiate the change. This change will not happen overnight. I don't even know if India will become the way we want it to become before my life time but I am going to start the change. In fact everyone one of us have to.

I am leading an activity in Hyderabad to put some traffic sense into people. You can do your bit too. Tell('tell' don't yell) someone not to spit in the train and explain why you think they shouldn't be spitting there. This is just an example and there is much more that we can do. It's high time we started doing something about our traffic, cleanliness, hygiene and corruption.

Very well written Reema!! What I've come to realize is that the Indians are the biggest enemies to India.. They complain about how well established other countries are but they are not willing to make an effort to have India changed to something like that!! They complain about India being dirty compared to the sparkling clean foreign countries but they don't think twice before spitting or urinating on the road like animals..They point fingers at others but simply make exceptions for themselves. There's only one thing they are good at : Destroying their own country and cribbing about life here!!

@all: Of course things will gradually change for the better - i am not sure nature allows anything irrational beyond a point. for now, it helps to know that there are more than few people who are doing their bit in this whole scenario. perhaps if we all consistently keep doing our bit to make this country a civilised, sensible, pro-nature, pro-development, pro-health, pro-learning and pro-happiness place to live in, things will continue to keep getting better faster. we are all going to be potentially proud Indians until then.
